Offset Your Airline Travel

Calculate your carbon footprint

At 4AIR, we believe we can all work together to protect the environment when we fly. When offsetting the carbon emissions from your flight, you lower the impact of your journey by actively supporting trusted climate solutions. Simply enter your travel information into our carbon calculator, select your preferred type of offset, and let us take care of the rest. See below for instructions and more information.

How to use the calculator:

  1. Enter your typical flight duration: short (< 2 hours), medium (2-6 hours), and long (>6 hours).

  2. Select the class of service flown (Economy or Premium). Anything Business Class or higher should be considered Premium.

  3. If you would like to offset multiple flights that fit this profile, you can adjust the number of flights in the box in the upper right of the calculator.

  4. Select your neutrality. See below for more information on each of the levels.

  5. Select Offset Now to make your purchase!

Summary of the 4AIR Levels:

Level 1 - Carbon Neutral - 100% carbon offset of an aircraft’s carbon footprint. Learn more >

Level 2 - Emissions Neutral - 300% carbon offset of an aircraft’s carbon footprint to account for non-carbon emissions such as NOx, soot, water vapor, and contrails. Learn more >

Level 3 - Beyond Neutral - 300% offset and 5% reduction through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel credits. Learn more >

Level 4 - Climate Champion -$2/mt contribution to the Aviation Climate Fund to advance sustainable aviation technology. Learn more >

Which Level is Right for Me?

This depends on how far you’d like to go with your sustainability commitment. Levels 1 and 2 focus on offsetting your footprint with verified carbon offsets. Level 1 focuses on just the carbon (CO2) footprint while Level 2 expands to offset the carbon and non-carbon footprint using an 300% estimate to include those non-carbon emissions (soot, water vapor, nitrous oxides, etc).

Going beyond offsetting to make direct reductions to your footprint is also available through the Level 3 and Level 4 options. Level 3 introduces Sustainable Aviation Fuel into the fuel ecosystem to reduce emissions directly within the industry. Level 4 goes even a step further to support partnerships with internationally-leading universities on research around aviation sustainability.

How is this footprint calculated?

A base carbon footprint per hour of flight is calculated based on two factors: class of service and average length of flight. These two factors determine which GHG Protocol carbon intensities should be used to calculate the base carbon footprint. Based on the selection from the user, one of the following GHG Protocol carbon intensities (no RF) is used:

  • Short-haul, economy class (< 3700km or <4hrs)

  • Short-haul, premium class (< 3700km or <4hrs)

  • Long-haul, economy class (>3700km or >4hrs)

  • Long-haul, premium class (>3700km or >4hrs)

This carbon intensity factor is multiplied by the upper end of the average flight duration selection (or 12 hours in the case of the 7+ option) to determine the base carbon footprint. This base carbon footprint is multiplied by level factors depending on the level selection of the user:

  • Level 1 - Carbon Neutral - 100% carbon offset of the base carbon footprint.

  • Level 2 - Emissions Neutral - 300% carbon offset of the base carbon footprint.

  • Level 3 - Beyond Neutral - 300% offset and 5% reduction through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel credits.

  • Level 4 - Climate Champion -All the above and a $2/mt contribution to the Aviation Climate Fund.
